SuperWhisper vs AudioPen

SuperWhisper gives you the controls. AudioPen gives you finished writing.

The verdict

Which one should you use?

SuperWhisper is built for control. It runs local Whisper models on Apple Silicon for fully offline transcription, lets you pick between AI providers, and lets you build custom modes that decide how each recording is processed. For developers and power users who enjoy configuring their tools, it goes deep.

AudioPen is built for getting to finished writing without setup. It voice types into any app on Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, and Android, and it can type what you say in a style you choose, even when you ramble. Styles come built in, and you can make your own from a sentence or a sample of your writing. It also keeps a notes library you can open from any browser, and offers an offline transcription option for voice typing.

Choose SuperWhisper if you want to tune the transcription pipeline yourself. Choose AudioPen if you want polished writing out of the box, on every device you use.

Where each one wins

Two tools, different strengths.

Where SuperWhisper wins

If you want deep, hands-on control over how your dictation is processed, SuperWhisper is a great choice.

  • Local models: Runs Whisper and Parakeet models on Apple Silicon, fully offline
  • Custom modes: Build modes with their own model, prompt, and hotkey
  • Model choice: Pick between AI providers and model sizes

Where AudioPen wins

If you want to speak naturally and get finished writing back without configuring anything, AudioPen is the clear choice.

  • Voice typing in any style: Ramble into any app and AudioPen types it as a formal email, bullet points, or your own style
  • Every device: Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android, the web, Apple Watch, and a Chrome extension
  • Notes library: Save recordings, restyle them later, and combine notes into one document
  • Your own voice: Build a style from a sample of your writing so the output sounds like you

Voice typing, in any style

Styles that work from your first recording.

SuperWhisper can shape your dictation once you have built a mode for it. AudioPen has styles built in, so a loose, spoken thought lands at your cursor already written the way you need it.

Talk the way you think. Start mid-thought, circle back, change your mind halfway through. AudioPen types your exact words when you want them, or writes it up in a style you pick, right at your cursor.

What you say
okay so this PR, um, basically the image resizing was on the main thread, which is why uploads froze the whole page, so I, I moved it into a web worker, and there's a fallback, for older browsers, that just does it the old way on the main thread
Typed into GitHub, in Bullet Points style

• Problem: image resizing ran on the main thread and froze the page during uploads • Fix: move resizing into a web worker • Fallback: older browsers keep the previous main-thread resizing

Works in any app, on every device: a hotkey on Mac and Windows, the AudioPen keyboard on iPhone and iPad, and a floating bubble on Android.

Rewrite level

Writing that reads exactly how you want it to.

Set how much AudioPen edits, then pick a style and a length. Keep your exact words, or polish it until it sounds like you.

Rewrite level

Retains structure where possible, rewritten in your chosen style

Output length

Some compression, but not too much.

Writing style

I found the export button bug. With more than 500 rows, the CSV export times out after 30 seconds and returns a blank file. It only happens on Safari; Chrome is fine. The likely cause is building the whole file in memory before download. I'll stream rows in batches of 100 and add a 500 row test. Jordan can review tomorrow, ahead of Thursday's release.

This is probably the best product I’ve come across in the past 18 months. So useful and it just keeps getting better.

Simple, but effective. The best tool to convert rambling into structured text, while keeping what you rambled intact.
Murali Balaraman · Founder, Studio CX360
I freakin love AudioPen.ai. If you are not using it yet, get on it.
Mr. Fettfinger
Most helpful AI tool = audiopen. Been using it daily to do things like: turn voicenotes into action items, content ideas (magic for this), summarize calls, giving feedback. The UI is also so clean that it’s an absolute joy to use.
Cathryn Lavery · @cathrynlavery
I used to manually summarize my transcribed brainstorming sessions. Took hours. AudioPen automates everything to the point where I am almost done with my article after talking about a topic for 10min. Magic.
Arvid Kahl · @arvidkahl
You speak to it as thoughts come in. It stitches a fine narrative from the rant. Writers can edit a ‘wrong’ page, not a ‘blank’ page. AudioPen gets you to 90% and then you do the rest.
Joseph Jude · @jjude
OH MY GOSH. I just learned about AudioPen today, and it’s already a GAME CHANGER. If you write, create, or do any serious thinking, this tool is for you.
Bear Smith · @RealBearSmith
This is one tool that has dramatically changed the way I think. It has allowed me to get the thoughts out of my head and down on paper.
Melvyn Tan · @melvyndotme
I’ve been using AudioPen to talk through my ideas, have them summarized and then use the summarization as a draft for blog posts. 13 out of 10. Highly recommend for the “blank page” problem.
chase adams · @curiouslychase
I can’t say enough good things about the AudioPen app. It’s been my go-to app for getting ideas down without having to type. Not only does it arrange even the most inarticulate nonsense into readable sentences, it’s the best dictation app I’ve ever used.
Otis Frampton · @otisframpton
No product has fundamentally changed the way I work over the last 12 months more than Audiopen. Home Screen on iPhone.
Sidin · @sidin
I can now create 95% of my blog posts and have minimal editing. In my tone of voice. This saves so much time
Vincent · @vincenthaywood
I’ve been writing online for over 10 years and tried virtually every writing app, productivity, note-taking, and idea-capture system out there. Nothing comes close to the amount of time AudioPen saves me.
Trying Not to Suck at Life · @trynotsuck
This is by far the greatest and most useful tool I have ever had! I have severe ADHD and it’s able to translate my rambling into a well written and concise note. I feel more organized and less anxious!
Kristen Doutsas · Aesthetician, entrepreneur

I am a natural speaker. My ideas flow faster when I speak. I record my voice notes and with my accent, it is perfect all the time.
Ash Ravikumar
AudioPen is able to clear my spoken thoughts into text in Estonian, one of the most complicated languages in the world! Shut Up And Take My Money!
Reigo Kimmel · YouTube expert, AI enthusiast
Already not sure what I did before I had AudioPen. If you often have thoughts you want to capture in writing, check it out. Cost is super reasonable too.
