AudioPen for Obsidian

Your AudioPen notes, automatically in Obsidian.

Talk it out in AudioPen. A clean, tagged note lands in your vault as a Markdown file, ready to link.

Free to install. Syncing needs AudioPen Prime.

A note is recorded in AudioPen. A moment later it appears as a new Markdown file in the AudioPen folder of an Obsidian vault, and opens with its properties, tags and text.

Set up in a minute

Install once. Notes keep arriving.

New and edited notes show up in your vault when Obsidian starts, every few minutes while it is open, and whenever you switch back to it.

AudioPen is in Obsidian's own list of community plugins, so you install it from inside the app. It works on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android.

1. Install the plugin

In Obsidian, open Settings, then Community plugins, and select Browse. Search for AudioPen, then install it and turn it on.

2. Sign in with your AudioPen email

Open the AudioPen plugin settings, enter the email on your AudioPen account and select Send code.

3. Your notes start arriving

Type the code from your email and select Connect. Your notes show up in an AudioPen folder within a few seconds.
Get the plugin

Already in Obsidian? Open AudioPen in the app and select Install.

Clean note, raw words kept

Clean notes, with your exact words underneath.

AudioPen's rewrite becomes the note. The title, dates, folder and tags sit on top as properties, so Obsidian can sort, filter and search them.

Your original transcript sits in a folded callout below it. Open it when you want to check exactly what you said.

It is plain Markdown, so the file is yours. Link to it, move it, edit it, or open it in any other app. Switch to Source to see the file itself.

Three bets for Q4, in order of confidence:

  • Ship the team plan by mid-October and price it per seat.
  • Rebuild onboarding around the first recording, not the signup form.
  • Run one partner launch with a newsletter our users already read.

What we're not doing: a redesign. That waits for Q1.

okay so three bets for Q4, um, in order of how confident I am. first one, we ship the team plan by like mid October and we price it per seat. second, onboarding, I think we rebuild it around the first recording, not the signup form. and third, one partner launch, maybe with a newsletter our users already read. oh and we are not doing a redesign, that can wait till Q1...

One folder, all your notes

Your AudioPen folders, in your vault.

Every AudioPen note lands in one AudioPen folder, filed under the same folder it has in AudioPen and named after its title.

AudioPen/
Where everything goes. Rename it in the plugin settings.
AudioPen/Work/
One folder for each of your AudioPen folders.
AudioPen/Uncategorized/
Notes without a folder, once you have at least one folder in AudioPen.
Title.md
Each note is named after its title.
Title (2).md
Two notes with the same title get a number, so neither is lost.
Projects/Q4 plan.md
Move or rename a note, say into Projects, and it stays there, still getting updates from AudioPen.

Ideas to try

Make your AudioPen notes part of your vault.

Synced notes are ordinary notes, so everything you already do in Obsidian works on them. A few ways to start:

A table of every note

Make a base with Obsidian's Bases and filter it to the AudioPen folder. Sort by created, group by folder, or show only one tag.

Link from your daily note

Type [[ and the start of a title to link an AudioPen note into today's daily note, a project page or a meeting note.

Query with Dataview

List every meeting you have talked through, newest first:

LIST FROM "AudioPen" AND #meeting SORT created DESC

Plan on a Canvas

Drag a handful of AudioPen notes onto a Canvas, group them and draw lines between them. A messy week of ideas turns into an outline.

See how ideas connect

Once you start linking AudioPen notes to the rest of your vault, the graph view shows which ideas keep coming back.

Search it all at once

Your AudioPen notes sit next to everything else you write, so one search covers what you typed and what you said.

How it syncs

Syncs on its own. Your edits stay safe.

The plugin checks for new and changed notes when Obsidian starts, every 5 minutes, and when you switch back to Obsidian. To sync right away, select the microphone icon or run AudioPen: Sync now. Sync goes one way, from AudioPen to your vault.

Edits are never overwritten

Change a note in Obsidian and AudioPen leaves it alone. If the note later changes in AudioPen, the sync skips it and tells you.

Deleted notes stay deleted

Delete a note in your vault and it is not downloaded again. Run Full re-sync if you want it back.

Move and rename freely

Notes you move or rename stay where you put them, and still get updates when they change in AudioPen.

Only reads from AudioPen

The plugin never sends anything from your vault, and never changes or deletes anything in AudioPen. Notes you delete in AudioPen keep their file.
